Final DP Update
Semester Reflection
I feel like I have learned a lot this year in Algebra II. I explored a lot of new concepts this year and learned how to apply those concepts to real life. I feel like I will be able to use the concepts that I have learned this semester for the rest of my life. One thing that I struggled with this year was getting to school on time. I had Algebra first period and if I didn't leave my house on time, I would be late for school. One thing that I really enjoyed this semester was the fact that all of the projects we did were so different and still relevant to the content we were learning. I think that it is very difficult to make projects in math interesting but I think that the ones we did were.

Project Reflection
The project that I remember the most is the conics project. In this project, we had to draw a picture and then recreate the picture using only conic sections and linear lines. We then wrote equations for the lines we used. I remember this project because most of the other kids' equations were totally off of what their original pictures looked like, but mine looked a lot like my original picture. I also liked this project because we could use our own imagination to create anything that we wanted. Because of this project, I feel like i have a much better understanding of conics.

Exam Project
Summary of Project
In this project, we had to create 10 problems of different difficulty levels. These problems had to be over content we had learned during the semester. We then took the 10 problems from every student in every class and whittled them down to around 60 problems. These problems were then put on our final exam.
I think this is cool because it lets the students control the content that is on the final exam. This way, something we never learned about won’t be on the test. |
My Problems
1. Factor: 6x2+8x-8
2. You are at Copper Mountain for the National Snowboard Competition. You are competing in the Slalom and Giant Slalom races tomorrow. You have 5 hours to tune your board before you have to go to bed. Your board needs to be waxed and have its edges sharpened. For every 30 minutes you spend waxing your board, you will go 7% faster. For every 20 minutes you spend sharpening your edges, you will go 5% faster. You must wax your board at least 2 hours and sharpen your board’s edges for at least 1 hour. How can you maximize your time so that you will go as fast as possible on race day? 3. Write a linear equation in any form that passes through the following points: (0, 2), (-4, 0) 4. Solve the following system for (x, y) by graphing. Then, write the equation of another line that passes through the point. y=2x+1 y=-3x+6 5. Find the inverse of the following matrix: 3 -5 1 2 6. Solve the equation by completing the square: x2+2x+4=0 7. Graph the system of quadratic inequalities. y≤-x2+4 y≥x2-4 8. Solve the following linear equation for x: y=2x+3 9. Sketch the graph of the following equation: 2x+y+3x=12 10. Solve the following equation using the quadratic formula: x2-3x-10=0 |
Linear Programming Project
Summary of Project
Linear programming is using constraint equations and a describing equation to find the most productive combination of a set of variables. In this project, we learned about linear programming and how to pull constraint equations out of a body of text. We then graphed them and saw the points where the lines met. We then plugged these points into our descriptive equation and saw which points yielded the best results. Then we all had to write our own word problems that were solvable by using linear programming. I wrote my problem about snowboarding at nationals. You have 5 hours to wax your board and sharpen your edges. Waxing improves your speed a certain amount and sharpening your edges improves your speed a different amount. You have to balance waxing your board and sharpening your edges to maximize your time to go the fastest.

Answer
You should wax your board for 1 hour and sharpen your edges for 4 hours. if you do this, you will go 74% faster.

Strengths and Weaknesses in Math
Strength
I think that one of my strengths in math is my ability to understand complex concepts. I usually understand something within a few days of being taught it.
|
Weakness
I think that one of my weaknesses in math is my inattention to details. I will sometimes forget a subtraction sign when I am solving an equation or forget to reduce a fraction for my answer.
