Today I spent the morning in large assembly. Large assembly is dedicated to putting together those pieces that are too big to hold in your hand. The tool that I helped assemble was used in the cleaning heat exchangers. The tool is on a large frame and holds a lance which can be inserted into the tubes for cleaning. The tool has motors so that it can move side to side, forward to backward, and move the lance up and down. What surprised me about large assembly was that their job included the packaging of the tool for shipment. They had these big long boxes that fit the long supports for the tool to package the tool in. The boxes were made out of a really stiff cardboard that I had never seen before. So I helped assemble and package the tool until lunchtime. After lunch, I went and helped Hugh and Jeff test one of the competitor's hose feeding/retracting systems. The tool is used in jobs where the hose with the nozzle must be inserted into a tube and then drawn back out again. We were testing the pull strength of the machine with two sizes of hoses in dry and oily conditions. The results were impressive, and informative to the engineers. At one point during the testing, I got to run the whole apparatus by myself. Once the testing was completed, I got to see the new machine built by Todd that was supposed to rival the one we were just testing in action. It was pretty cool to see that, because I had helped to put it together. By the time that was all wrapped up, it was time for me to go.
